 | Pokemon was first released as Pocket Monsters in 1996. Since many Japanese players had already shortened the name to "Pokemon", Nintendo chose the name "Pokemon" for the North American release. The first games introduced the concept of becoming a Pokemon Trainer and catching all 150 of the original Pokemon. These first games also introduced the idea multiple game versions, with some variation of Pokemon availability in each.
